VOLUNTEER NATURE CONSERVATION | WILDLIFE VOLUNTEERING | PORT ELIZABETH
The centre is located in the unspoilt Cape Reciefe Nature Reserve, surrounded with the wonderful sounds of birdlife that the reserve can offer. The reserve is also home to many birds like, the Black Oyster Catcher, Cormorants, Gulls and Lapwings. Close by the reserve, there are awesome views of Algoa Bay and wonderful beaches that Port Elizabeth can offer. As well as learning about the life- cycle and conservation of the African Penguin, which is an endangered species, you will also have ‘hands - on’ as you are being taught how to catch, hold, feed and tube feed these wonderful birds, each with their own individual characters. You will care for the weak, the strong, the cheeky and the just plain daft and when the sun is high you will probably find yourself longing to join them in the pool too! You will also be involved with the many other tasks that need to be carried out daily including the preparation of fish, cleaning of facility, pools and mats, sterilising syringes and many more things. Be warned, as cute as they are, penguins will bite given the opportunity. The training you will receive by SAMREC will allow you to handle the birds safely.
The other opportunities during the project will allow all of our volunteers to be able to learn something about our surrounding environment, being able to assist in the field guiding of the reserve, being taught about the various plants/vegetation, being able to identify birds and spoors/tracks of the wonderful animals in our magnificent reserve. And you would also be able to assist in our educational department, teaching all the urban and rural under privileged children about the beauty of nature and assist in tours of SAMREC. At SAMREC, once you have completed the project. You will leave with great memories and would have had a life changing experience.
What volunteers will be able to learn while volunteering at SAMREC:
· Rehabilitation techniques & Feeding Penguins
· Blood Analysing for Diseases
· Assisting in any oil spill/ emergency situation

VOLUNTEER TESTIMONIALS
Tamsin Steward, Freewalker Volunteer: My time on the FREEWALKER projects was unforgettable. I fell more and more in love with South Africa each day, and had an absolute blast. Not only was the experience completely eye opening, it was probably the most rewarding and enriching thing I have ever done. I only wish it could’ve lasted longer.
