VOLUNTEER PROGRAM SOUTH AFRICA
Kwa-Ford is an African Primary School in New Brighton, Port Elizabeth. The area in which the school is situated, New Brighton, is an extremely poor one and the children that attend classes there are seriously undereducated and struggling. The surrounding area is poverty stricken and the school is trying hard to educate the children in the best possible way, using the poor resources available to them, with minimal funds. Our organisation is assisting in the development of a stimulating learning environment through building a computer room, library and general upliftment of the school.
New Brighton was created during the Apartheid era in South Africa, it was an area provided to the African People after the forceful removal act to get them out of the rural areas. So understandably, the area is still pretty much poverty stricken and running a school in such an area is an incredibly difficult task! I have been taking volunteers to work at the School for the past two years and already we have made some valuable changes to the school.
The Free Walker organisation is assisting in the development of a stimulating learning environment through building a computer room, library and general upliftment of the school. The children of the Kwa-Ford school have never been exposed to computers, thus are unprepared and have a disadvantage for achieving higher education or being competitive in the job market. The main focus behind developing a computer room for the school is to broaden the education of the learners through exposure to basic computer and writing skills and connecting them to the outside world through internet. The first step is to acquire twenty functioning computers. Once the computers are in place, all the teachers in the school will go through a computer training course. A general computer skills course will then be taught by the current teachers and the use of computers will be incorporated into all curriculums in school. Imagine what we can achieve by installing computers and creating a whole new classroom for the school. The children of the Kwa-Ford school have never been exposed to computers, thus are unprepared and have a disadvantage for achieving higher education or being competitive in the job market.
